This week, Lucid Motors had a grand opening ceremony for their research and development facility located in Detroit, a significant step forward for the electric vehicle manufacturer. This facility represents an investment in innovation and technology that aims to propel the company into the forefront of the automotive industry. The initiative was first mentioned back in February when Lucid received a substantial grant from the state of Michigan, aimed at fostering growth and development in the region, to open a facility in Southfield, Michigan. This facility will not only create jobs but also enhance the engineering and design processes for Lucid’s revolutionary electric vehicles, aiding in their commitment to sustainability and cutting-edge performance. Since opening in April, Lucid has approximately 70 employees on-site, including 24 engineers, with ambitious plans to expand this workforce to over 250 staff in the coming years. This increase in personnel is a strategic move to foster closer relationships with vital partners in the automotive industry while simultaneously attracting top talent directly from the heart of automotive innovation in the US. By positioning itself in this dynamic hub, Lucid aims not only to enhance collaboration with key stakeholders but also to tap into the rich pool of expertise available in the area. As the company continues to grow, it is committed to building a diverse team that can drive forward its mission of redefining the electric vehicle landscape, ensuring that it stays at the forefront of technological advancements and market trends.

Eric Bach, Senior Vice President and Chief Engineer at Lucid, spoke at the event on Thursday. When asked why they chose Michigan, he said, “Michigan is known as the U.S. hub of automotive. It’s important to find the right fit, talent, and access to top universities. We have many suppliers here, allowing us to connect with them directly. It’s a strategic investment.”

During this event, Eric shared more details about the Lucid Gravity, Midsize, and the future of Lucid Motors.

The Gravity will have several variations, including a standard 7-seater SUV and a 5-seater SUV. It features 800 HP, a range of 440 miles, and a 120-kilowatt battery that provides about 3.66 miles per kWh. The launch will begin with Grand Touring and Touring models, with a base model expected later.

The Lucid Midsize revealed more details about its three-car lineup, which will include a two-row crossover, a five-seater SUV, and a smaller sedan. This platform will use the Atlas drivetrain unit, which is in production. Bach confirmed that there will be no Truck or Convertible in this lineup.

Lucid’s future includes the Air, Gravity, and Midsize lineup, along with possible partnerships. It’s an exciting time for Lucid, and I’m happy to see them taking the right steps toward an all-electric future.
